King's Wharf
King’s wharf was constructed on reclaimed land during WWI to replace the smaller Queen’s wharf at Pier Street.

Timeline
1909
Plans for a new and expanded wharf to replace the Queen’s wharf are formulated.
1912
Work to reclaim the land at Walu Bay and construct the wharf begins. The current road that runs parallel along the Kings Wharf is named Harris Road after the engineer, C.W. Harris.
1914-18
King’s Wharf is completed during WWI. Copra sheds lined the southern end of the wharf. The north bank of Nubukalou Creek is also built up for inter-island shipping.
1921
The Queen’s wharf is dismantled.
1953
The wharf is damaged by a tsunami.
1961-63
Wharf is reconstructed. A new Customs House is erected at the same time.
